Appointment joins a raft of internal promotions and new business wins in managed services

Patient Zero announced the promotion of Brendan Homann to Chief Operating Officer to support the team-based software development services company’s next stage of expansion.

This appointment follows a period of rapid growth for Patient Zero, including the launch of a Managed Services offering to support deployed applications, hiring a Sydney based development team to service local clients and a number of internal promotions.

Paul Briggs, CEO of Patient Zero said that Brendan’s capabilities as a product owner and consultant meant that he was the perfect fit to sustainably scale Patient Zero’s unique employee-owned Way of Working.

“Brendan’s role is essential to ensuring we are able to effectively bridge the gap between sales and delivery, and maintain our ability to execute with exceptional results as we scale, said Paul Briggs.

“Key to this will be his ability to sustainably scale our Way of Working, ensuring that we continue to empower our people to innovate and deliver exceptional work for our customers.

“Brendan is ideally positioned to help us sustainably accelerate our growth to Sydney and beyond.”

Brendan said that he was looking forward to expanding the diverse range of industries and technologies Patient Zero services, building stronger relationships with partners and growing the Managed Services offering.

“Since we established the business around teams-as-a-service, we’ve delivered hundreds of full stack cloud native applications, enabling everything from patient engagement platforms to waste management solutions and insurance technology,” said Brendan Homann.

“Through leveraging Site Reliability Engineering principles and automation, our whole-of-lifecycle managed services approach is able to proactively address 60 per cent of issues before they affect a customer, focusing on maintaining applications - not patching bugs as they appear.

“We’ve recently signed a number of managed services clients, both for existing applications they own and new applications we’ve built, who are excited by our unique approach to supporting their applications, and the incredible team at PZ available to support them,” said Brendan.

Rapidly growing demand for Patient Zero’s team-based development approach and Managed Service offering has resulted in a number of internal promotions, including the appointment of Demelza Green as the firm’s first Principal Experience Manager and the promotion of Josh McCure and Emilien Perico as Developer Custodians.

“The newly created role of Principal Experience Manager will help to ensure that we deliver an exceptional employee, customer and end user experience, which is pivotal to our growth plans,” said Paul.

“Developer Custodians are valuable sounding boards for our teams, they play a supportive role in daily delivery life, ensuring that we deliver working software to clients, every time. Josh and Emilien are perfectly equipped for this role.

“Despite the constant challenges that COVID-19 has thrown us, we’re proud to be setting the stage for an exciting year of growth,” concluded Paul.

At PZ, we’re always exploring how design and technology can better complement each other. We recently hosted a Lunch & Learn featuring Emma Carter, Experience Design Leader and author of DesignedUp, whose talk was a candid, experience-rich exploration of what it takes to create great products, and even better collaboration between disciplines.

A friend and former colleague reached out to me recently to ask if I could help him fix a couple of bugs in a small project he’d been working on. He was not a developer, but had worked in and around developers for his whole 20+ year career as a business analyst, product owner and program manager. With the advent of tools like Cursor and Lovable his lack of coding ability was (maybe) no longer a barrier to getting some ideas he’d been incubating in his mind for a while, out into the world. With credit card in hand, he dived headfirst into the world of “vibe” coding. We met for coffee, and he showed me the prototype he’d built. I was quite impressed with what he showed me (running on his laptop…deploying it anywhere was a bridge he had not crossed yet) – a capable working prototype that demonstrated the ideas he was trying to prove out. I asked him about the “development experience” and he said it had been great at first, and he’d been able to make a lot of progress quickly, but at some point he hit a bit of a wall where each change he tried to make introduced more issues, and he felt like it was pointless to continue. He’d switched between a few different AI coding tools in an effort to see if the problems he encountered were specific to the tool he’d started with, but without success. The vibes had run out.
