Taylor Swift's "Patient Zero": Our (Very Unauthorised) Exclusive Interview

Lennah kuskoff • September 25, 2026

EDITORS NOTE

On Tuesday, Taylor Swift announced a new single called "Patient Zero", released Friday, 25 September. We are a Brisbane software company called Patient Zero. We were elated! Taylor Swift wrote a new song?! And it’s about US?! We reached out to Taylor's team for comment, and after no reply (shocker!), we decided that Paul in a wig would have to do.

Update, 26 September: The song is out, the meaning is confirmed, and it is somehow about knowing when to leave a toxic incumbent. Our lawyers advise us not to say "told you so." Details below.

We Sat Down With “Taylor Swift” to Talk About Patient Zero (And Why She Named Her Next Single After Us)

We met Taylor in our boardroom in downtown Brisbane CBD. She arrived late, downed a sparkling water and asked where the Wi-Fi password was, which we found relatable. She was taller than we expected, wore a blonde wig with the confidence of a middle aged man, and spoke in a voice that sounded a lot like it came from Paul.

So Taylor, is "Patient Zer0" about us?

"I guess it’s kind of about a love triangle if I really think about it. It started with my vendor at the time. We'd been together for six years. He was on the preferred supplier panel, so everyone said he was the safe choice. By the end he'd stopped returning my emails, every change request came back as a quote, and the transformation program that was due in 2022 was still 'ninety per cent done'. He got comfortable. I was paying premium rates for a man who missed every milestone."

[Her eyelids flutter, holding back tears as one false lash threatens to come completely loose.]

"Then Patient Zero walked in. I gave them the project nobody wanted to touch, the problem child, but I didn't fire anyone. I just let the old vendor see them in the room. I've never seen a man find his status report so fast. Suddenly there were release notes. There was a roadmap. He came to a meeting on time and brought slides. My friends call it the catfish effect. You put one hungry fish in the tank and suddenly the sardines remember how to swim."

So did that rekindle anything with the old vendor?

"We're working on it. He has to earn it now, and I think that's healthy for both of us."

Some fans say it's a love song for Travis.

" Travis is wonderful. He has never once asked me to migrate a legacy system without a test suite, and that's the bar, really. He’ll get a whole album one day. But this one's about the moment I realised I was only in a relationship with a supplier because leaving felt like more work than staying."

So how does the song end?

[Adjusts wig. Wig is now slightly backwards.]

"That's the twist. When the problem child project shipped, Patient Zero handed me all the documentation, the automation, every password and a very clear 'you don't need us anymore'. They made it easy to leave. Nobody has ever made it easy to leave. The old vendor held the source code like a hostage, and these guys gave me the keys and blew me a kiss at the door."

"So the last chorus is about the one who let you go. And obviously I called them back three weeks later with another project. I'm not made of stone."

Given the content of your latest single, can we look forward to any other tech savvy concepts, like sovereign AI, on the next album?

"I bought back my masters, didn't I? So you might be able to guess my answer to this one. Ownership matters. If your AI agents run on someone else's model, on someone else's servers, with your data, then you don't own your masters. You're renting your own voice. I'd put that on a friendship bracelet if the letters fit. [Laughs] So yes, you’ll absolutely be hearing more about that in my next album."

Are you and Patient Zero planning a collaboration?

"I'd love to open for them at their next stand-up. I hear it's at 9:15am, I hope they don’t mind if it runs a little long."

[Stands. Stumbles over cowboy boots. Leaves through the fire exit, which sets off the alarm.]

Taylor has left the building. Paul has returned to his desk, and the wig has been stashed in the stationery cupboard.

Wig off: the actual facts about "Patient Zero/0"

Here is what's actually known for anyone who came for Taylor and was disappointed to find Paul.

"Patient Zer0" is a Taylor Swift single released by Republic Records on 25 September 2026. It runs 3:46, was recorded in October 2025, and is associated with a deluxe edition of her twelfth album, The Life of a Showgirl. Swift announced it with a caption saying she'd been "impatiently waiting" to share it, and pre-orders on her website were open for 24 hours.

What is Taylor Swift's "Patient Zer0" actually about?

Confirmed since release: the song is a warning call to a woman now dating Swift's ex. Swift casts herself as patient zero, the first person infected by his toxicity, and treats the bad relationship as something contagious, sickness imagery and all. The music video features Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, and the dominant fan reading points to Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas. Early theories ranged from a love song for Travis Kelce to a 2024 LA Times column that called Swift "patient zero for emotional contagion." It is not, for the record, about Travis.

So, to recap: the song is about being stuck with a toxic incumbent, hearing from the person who was there first and knows the symptoms, and realising you're allowed to leave. Swifties, we owe you an apology, because that is somehow even more on-brand than our interview. It is, word for word, what our vendor transition team does for a living. We couldn't have written it better. We did, however, try.

When did "Patient Zer0" release in Australia?

The single was released at 2.00pm, Friday 25 September, 2026 on streaming services.

Where does the term "patient zero" come from?

The term “patient zero” began with a misread letter. In an early disease-tracking study, a patient was labelled “Patient O”, meaning “outside California”; the letter O was mistaken for a zero, creating the false impression that this person was where the outbreak began.

So, the most famous O-to-zero swap in history happened decades before Taylor did it to her Instagram bio.

The phrase later found a home in zombie fiction as shorthand for the first infected person and, sometimes, the key to finding a cure. This is the way it made it into the nomenclature of our Brisbane based software development company.

What is Patient Zero, the company?

Patient Zero is a 100% Australian-owned and operated software consultancy headquartered in Brisbane. We design, build and support custom software, mobile apps and AI-enabled systems for organisations that need more than an off-the-shelf product.

Why is the Australian software company called Patient Zero?

Our name has an unexpected origin: the co-operative survival game Left 4 Dead. Sorry, Swifties.

In the game, the mechanics are brutal but straightforward: you cannot survive alone. If a player runs off to be a hero, the team loses. You only win by sticking together, communicating constantly and protecting each other's blind spots.

Our founders, engineers who spent years navigating broken corporate structures, realised that successful software delivery works the same way. We are a team-based company, founded on the belief that small, cross-functional, innovative teams with an equal voice are the best way to solve complex problems.

What does Patient Zero do?

We help organisations recover software projects when technical debt, delivery delays, or problems with an existing supplier prevent progress. Our project rescue and vendor transition team audits the codebase, stabilises the environment and pays down the technical debt that's blocking delivery.

The sovereign AI stuff Paul kept bringing up in the wig is real, too. We build agentic AI systems that Australian organisations own and control, with the data, the models and the guardrails staying where you can see them. Taylor bought back her master's. We'd suggest you don't sign away yours in the first place.

Just like Taylor, we have range and a few "Eras" under our belts:

The legal stuff: This article is satire. Taylor Swift was not interviewed, has not endorsed Patient Zero and, as far as we know, has never heard of us. But we bet if she did, she'd like us.
